We attended lectures from some fantastic research physicists about various aspects of particle physics and had to create a piece of work in reaction to what we learnt. The project culminated in an awesome show in the Rag Factory. http://jigglingatoms.org/ My piece is about the emptiness of the atom, something quite basic that we learnt early on in the lectures, but that stayed with me. When I was told that an atom is essentially a tiny nucleus surrounded by 99.9999% space, it blew my mind. Everything that we see and touch in the material world is mostly space, nothingness. If we took the atomic structure of our most dense element, diamond, and blew it up so that a solid nucleus was the size an orange, the nextdoor atom would be two football fields away. The warehouse space used to be an old textiles mill, so we tried to incorporate as much of the buildings history into the innovative modern club design. Inspired by the classic sci-fi series 'The Prisoner', the festival takes place in this surreal but extremely magical village where the series was set. The project is a modern interpretation of Shakespear's 'Tempest', and runs over a period of six months, in which the interior of the shop is completely transformed each month. With support and funding from Hackney Council, Create and Arts Council Lottery the project breathing new life into the area. The design and construction of the second set: A.R.I.E.L. was a collaborative effort by myself, George Mein, Steph Pollard, and TEAM TEAM (Emma Denby and Elizabeth Lindsay). With three weeks of prep and sourcing, and a manic 10 day build, we had to construct the neglected reception area of an industrial mining corporation, with a secret door through to a super computer controlling the conditions of the island on which the play is set.
